Senator Risa Hontiveros emphasized the need for unity within the opposition bloc, saying consolidation behind a single presidential candidate is crucial to securing a “fighting chance” in the 2028 national elections.
Hontiveros said discussions among opposition figures should focus on identifying the strongest and most viable candidate early, ideally by the first quarter of 2027, as part of preparations for the presidential race.
“I think what is really important is we identify in the opposition within this year or until the first quarter next year who is our strongest candidate that will be our standard bearer,” she told local reporters on Tuesday, May 26.
She stressed that once a standard-bearer is identified, the rest of the opposition should fully support that candidate to avoid fragmentation in the 2028 polls.
“What is most important is that we are united in supporting the candidate so that the people can also rally behind and we will have a fighting chance,” she said.
During a recent visit to Guimaras on May 22, Hontiveros said she is “seriously considering” a presidential bid in 2028, noting that early preparations are already underway among potential opposition contenders.
She described the current political environment as similar to informal primaries, where candidates are working to improve their standing in surveys in the lead-up to the elections.
Akbayan party-list has already expressed support for Hontiveros’ possible presidential candidacy and her role as standard-bearer of the “democratic opposition” in 2028.
The group said it is ready to mobilize support alongside allied organizations and sectoral groups should she formally enter the presidential race.
It further highlighted Hontiveros’ legislative record, citing her advocacy on expanding maternity leave for working mothers, protecting patients from abusive health institutions, and promoting access to affordable medicines and universal health care.
“She does not step back for the weak, she does not waver in the face of the powerful, and she does not stop as long as there is something that needs to be defended,” the group said.
“Like her, ordinary citizens also do not retreat. Despite hardship and disorder, people continue to pursue their dreams for a better life without giving up,” it added.
