BACOLOD CITY – A 12-year-old Grade 7 student died after drowning in a river near his school in Barangay Aranda, Hinigaran, Negros Occidental, on Thursday, Nov. 7.
Police said the victim, a resident of Barangay Candumarao, went to the river to swim with classmates during their lunch break at around 12:30 p.m.
The victim reportedly moved to a deeper section of the river and drowned.
His friends attempted to rescue him but were unsuccessful as the current swept him away.
Classmates called for help from nearby bystanders.
The victim was found underwater 10 minutes later, a few meters from where he was last seen.
He was pronounced dead at a hospital, according to police.
