Goring displaces over 100K Negrenses

BACOLOD City – Some 100,334 residents of Negros Occidental have been affected by floods and rains brought by southwest monsoon enhanced by Typhoon Goring for four days now, data from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) on Wednesday showed.

The affected population included 30,916 families from 139 barangays in 15 out of the 31 local government units (LGUs) of the province, excluding this capital city.

“There were no casualties, whether dead, injured or missing,” the report added.

As of 11 a.m., at least 1,949 families or 7,319 persons are staying in evacuation centers.

Some 59 houses were damaged, including 16 destroyed and 43 partially damaged.

On Wednesday, classes were suspended in 27 LGUs while work in government offices of 17 LGUs were canceled.

Meanwhile, damage to agriculture, fisheries and animals has reached almost PHP116 million, the report showed.

Among rice, corn and high-value commercial crops, the cost of damage was PHP112.994 million reported by 48 barangays in nine cities and municipalities, affecting 2,753 farmers.

Damage to fisheries totaled PHP1.447 million in two cities and municipalities while PHP1.17 million in damage was reported by the livestock sector in six LGUs. (PNA)
