Gonzalez family honors late justice secretary with art, outreach

Marking the 10th death anniversary of former Ilonggo Justice Secretary Raul M. Gonzalez Sr., an art exhibit by his son, Jose Mari T. Gonzalez, opened on September 12 at the Raul M. Gonzalez Sr. Museum in Jaro, Iloilo City.

The exhibit, titled “PWD: Painting with Disabilities,” features 44 artworks by Jose Mari, a person with disabilities (PWD) born with cerebral palsy and epilepsy.

His mobility became more restricted after spinal surgery, but painting has served as a vital form of rehabilitation and self-expression.

Speaking on behalf of her brother, Dr. Marigold Gonzalez, a former city councilor, shared that Jose Mari’s journey into art began as a therapeutic exercise.
“Painting gave him back something he thought he had lost,” Marigold said during a press conference.
“After his spinal surgery, his mobility was even more limited, but through art, he rehabilitated his hands and expressed emotions words couldn’t capture. Painting has brought him joy and pride.”

The exhibit invites visitors to appreciate not only the artistry but also the strength and perseverance behind each piece.

The paintings are displayed on the museum’s second floor and are available for bidding, with proceeds going toward causes close to the Gonzalez family.

In conjunction with the exhibit, the Gonzalez family hosted a medical mission on September 14, reflecting their continued commitment to public service, a value championed by the late Gonzalez Sr.

The mission offered free services, including X-rays, ECG tests, glucose screenings, dental care, and medications.

Approximately 300 Iloilo City residents benefited from the event, which was held at the Gonzalez Museum from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
