Globe successfully piloted its 50GPON (50 Gigabit Passive Optical Network) technology, offering faster and more reliable connectivity for seamless streaming, quicker downloads, and uninterrupted online experiences.
The pilot test, conducted at the Globe Valero Telepark in Makati City, showcased how 50GPON technology delivers data transmission speeds of up to 50 Gbps. This breakthrough sets a new standard in broadband connectivity and supports Globe’s vision of providing multi-gigabit internet speeds.
Surpassing the capabilities of the current 10GPON technology, 50GPON offers improved efficiency, lower latency, and the capacity to meet the diverse demands of residential and business users.
The pilot featured extensive testing, including throughput, end-to-end latency, and jitter, alongside real-world applications such as 8K video streaming, cloud gaming, augmented and virtual reality, fiber-to-the-room solutions, and high-definition video conferencing.
“Globe is committed to providing Filipinos with the best possible internet experience, and this breakthrough in 50GPON technology is a key component of our future-forward approach to broadband connectivity,” said James Lim, vice president for broadband service planning and engineering at Globe Telecom.
“With this milestone, we’re taking a giant step toward ensuring our network is ready to support the evolving needs of our customers, both now and in the years to come,” Lim added.
The 50GPON technology is expected to transform digital experiences for users, enabling real-time cloud gaming, 8K streaming, and enhanced smart home solutions. It also opens opportunities for smart cities, telemedicine, advanced manufacturing, e-learning, and secure enterprise connectivity.
Globe is identifying potential areas and early adopters for the technology as it prepares for future deployment.
With this achievement, Globe continues to set a benchmark for innovation in telecommunications, bridging the digital divide and advancing connectivity for a digitally empowered Philippines.
