The man Gilas Pilipinas had been eyeing to take over its head coaching duties for the FIBA November window is no longer an option for the team.
Coach Alex Compton just left the country and returned to the US with his family and is likely to stay there for good with the COVID-19 pandemic still wreaking havoc in the Philippines.
After his decision of parting ways with the Alaska Aces in the PBA, Compton signed a full-contract as a Gilas deputy coach but things went astray after the pandemic struck the country.
With no Gilas development during the span of the lockdown until now, coach Compton decided to move to the US and find better opportunities to continue his coaching career.
The Gilas management is currently doing all it can to provide their final coaching staff and roster with only a month remaining to prepare for the next FIBA window.
As the PBA is set to start their bubble in Clark, Gilas will be having a tough time in creating their final lineup because part of the safety protocol is the players’ remaining in the bubble until the season’s conclusion.
FIBA is scheduled in November and the PBA bubble season will end in December which means the inclusion of the PBA members in the Gilas lineup would be impossible.
