BACOLOD CITY – Residential electricity rates in the Negros Power franchise area will increase slightly in April due to a higher generation charge.
Negros Power said in a press release over the weekend that prices in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market doubled from PHP3.5383 per kilowatt-hour in March to PHP6.6865 per kilowatt-hour in April.
As a result, the total average residential rate will rise from PHP11.4766 per kilowatt-hour to PHP12.3563 per kilowatt-hour this billing month.
The utility attributed the increase in WESM prices to a combination of lower supply and higher demand during the summer months.
Planned and forced outages at power plants, particularly coal and natural gas facilities, reduced electricity supply in the grid.
Meanwhile, extreme heat beginning in the first week of March drove a 5.9% increase in energy demand across the Visayas.
This supply-demand mismatch significantly pushed up electricity prices.
To help mitigate rising power costs, Negros Power shared energy-saving tips for the summer.
Consumers are advised to use energy-efficient appliances with Energy Star ratings.
They are also encouraged to turn off lights and electronics when not in use.
Using fans instead of air conditioners is recommended, as fans consume significantly less electricity.
Keeping windows and blinds closed during the hottest part of the day can help block heat from entering homes.
Adjusting thermostats a few degrees higher can also reduce energy consumption without compromising comfort.
Negros Power said that following these tips can help households manage electricity bills during the summer season.
