BACOLOD CITY — A 36-year-old woman and her 17-year-old niece were killed, while the woman’s 19-year-old son was injured after a fuel tanker truck plowed into their food cart and overshot a gutter in Barangay Palaka, Valladolid, Negros Occidental, on Sunday.
The fatalities were identified as Ramilie, a resident of Barangay Poblacion, Valladolid, and her minor niece, a resident of E.B. Magalona who was vacationing with relatives in Valladolid.
Ramilie’s son, Mhiko, was injured and is now in stable condition while recuperating in a hospital in Bacolod City.
Police Master Sgt. Eduardo Combong, traffic investigator of the Valladolid Municipal Police Station, said the victims were preparing items for sale at their food cart when the truck hit them along the roadside at about 4:15 p.m.
The truck was driven by Dionesio, 57, of Barangay Handumanan, Bacolod City, police said.
Combong said the driver claimed he dozed off, causing him to lose control of the vehicle and swerve to the side of the road.
The driver had left Candoni at 4 a.m. for a fuel delivery and was on his way back to Bacolod City when the crash happened, Combong said.
The truck reportedly ran over Ramilie, who was declared dead at a hospital.
Her niece died at a hospital later that night, around 8 p.m.
Combong said the minor’s family filed a complaint for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide against the driver on Monday.
The family of Ramilie and her son has yet to decide whether to file a complaint, police said.
In a Facebook post, the College of Allied Medical Health Sciences Student Council of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos said it was urgently raising funds to help Mhiko’s family with medical expenses.
Valladolid is a coastal municipality south of Bacolod City, while Candoni is in southern Negros Occidental.
