BACOLOD CITY — The Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office is investigating the killing of a 73-year-old American former professor inside his home in Barangay Ajong, Sibulan, Negros Oriental, on Sunday.
An initial investigation showed that the victim and his wife were watching television in their living room when three unidentified people wearing bonnets that concealed their faces stormed the house shortly before midnight.
One of the assailants, who was reportedly armed with a handgun, shot the victim in the head.
The victim’s wife was unharmed.
The victim was found dead on a sofa.
Police Capt. Stephen Polinar, spokesperson for the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office, said the victim had previously worked as a professor at Silliman University in Dumaguete City.
Silliman University, founded in 1901, has more than 10,000 students on its Dumaguete campus.
Police formed a Special Investigation Task Group to focus on the case.
Investigators are reviewing closed-circuit television footage in an effort to identify the assailants.
Polinar said investigators could not yet determine whether robbery was the motive because police were exploring all possible angles.
Police are pursuing investigative leads and coordinating with other law enforcement units to identify, locate and arrest the assailants.
The Negros Oriental police urged anyone with information that could help the investigation to report it to the nearest police station or contact the Sibulan Municipal Police Station.
Police assured the public that authorities were taking all necessary steps to bring the assailants to justice and maintain peace and order in the province.
