Flood control structures, road concreting works completed in central Iloilo towns

Two new flood control structures along Jalaur River in central Iloilo were completed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)-Iloilo Second District Engineering Office.

The projects are in barangays Tabucan, Barotac Nuevo and Poblacion, Passi City.

District Engineer Sanny Boy O. Oropel said the P46.9-million flood control project in Barotac Nuevo involves the construction of a 254.8-lineal meter structure including drainage and 181-lineal meter groundsill (gabions).

The P23.2-million project in Passi City includes the construction of 186.4 lineal meters concrete revetment wall.

“These flood control projects aim to protect the lives and properties of the people living near Jalaur River, especially from the blistering impact of a flood when heavy rains occur,” Oropel said.

“The structures also help prevent erosion of soil and block water influx to the road that may damage residential areas and other properties situated near the river,” he added.

Other than flood control, the District has completed the concreting of Gama Grande-Gama Pequeño-Malaguinabot Tahing-Sitio Agdayao Road in the town of Calinog.

Oropel said the project, in the amount of P29.39 million, involved concrete paving of 1.699-kilometer, 2-lane, 6.1-meter wide, 280-millimeter thick road including cross drainage system, slope protection, and thermoplastic pavement markings.

“This concrete road will provide easy, fast and safe travel to hundreds of motorists and commuters toward establishments, recreational areas, health centers, and schools. This road will also serve as an extension to the town proper,” Oropel said.

“The improved road will also strengthen the springboard development towards progressive Calinog, which will help not only the living condition of the people but also the economic growth of the community,” he added. (DPWH-6/RPAIO)
