The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Aklan District Engineering Office constructed a flood control structure to protect a hazard-prone barangay in Aklan by mitigating risks and flooding along the river.
Steel sheet piles, concrete blocks, hexapod, and an access ramp were used in the construction of a 390-meter-long revetment wall (flood control structure) with a budget of ₱59.4 million.
DPWH 6 Regional Director Nerie D. Bueno said the structure in Brgy. Rivera, Libacao in Aklan will serve as a barrier against floods and water overflows that may affect local communities near the river.
“With a series of unexpected heavy rain pours, this structure is beneficial to the people of Aklan, particularly those who live along or near rivers. This will protect them from potential flooding and riverbank erosion, which could endanger life, property, and livelihood,” Bueno said.
The wall will also protect the roads from potential damage and will not hamper the delivery of basic necessities and the transportation of goods from town to remote areas in Aklan.
“The completion of the structure in Aklan aims to accomplish DPWH’s goal of providing security against disasters such as flooding and to mitigate disaster risk among the local community here in the Philippines,” Bueno concluded. (DPWH-6)
