First drug discovery patent in Western Visayas granted to the University of San Agustin

The University of San Agustin (USA) celebrated another milestone by obtaining the first Philippine patent for health research in Western Visayas.

This groundbreaking discovery, named “Isolated Bacterial Strain of the Genus Streptomyces and Antibiotic Metabolites Therefrom,” described the potential of a beneficial bacteria from Iloilo marine sand that produces antibiotics.

The discovery was led by Dr. Doralyn S. Dalisay, Director of the Center for Chemical Biology and Biotechnology, along with Dr. Jonel Saludes, Director of the Center for Natural Drug Discovery and Development, and Edna M. Sabido, Science Research Specialist.

The patent, which grants the university the exclusive rights to develop, sell the technology, and manufacture possible products, was officially handed over to USA President Rev. Fr. Arnel S. Dizon, OSA, by Marianne Tajanlangit-Bebit from the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines during a ceremony on September 25, 2024.

“This achievement, coinciding with the 120th anniversary of the university’s foundation, adds another significant milestone. The outcomes of our research extend far beyond publication; they have a real-world impact that reaches beyond the walls of the university for the health and well-being of Filipinos,” Dr. Saludes said in his welcome remarks.

Fr. Dizon, echoing Saludes, emphasized the university’s commitment to excellence not only in education but also in the broader services. He highlighted that the patent reflects the university’s dedication to meaningful advancements that benefit local and global communities.

With this patent secured, USA solidifies its emerging significant role in the field of drug discovery, positioning the institution as a leader in pharmaceutical research in Western Visayas in particular, and the Philippines in general. According to Dr. Dalisay, it is only the beginning of a long journey.

“We still have much to do, from developing products for pre-clinical and clinical testing to ensuring they are safe and effective for public use,” she stated.

Dr. Assem el Baghdady, Consulting Director of USA’s Innovation and Technology Support Office, congratulated and commended the university for setting a new standard of excellence in innovation.

Dr. Naomi Cossette R. Luis, Assistant Regional Director of the Department of Science and Technology Region VI (DOST VI) also lauded the hard work behind the achievement. In closing, Director of USA’s Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO) Aneline P. Tolones praised the efforts of the research team and emphasized the university’s vital role in promoting advancements in biotechnology.

It was also emphasized that academe-industry partnership is important in commercialization. Hence, pharmaceutical companies that support the economic and social upliftment of Filipinos are invited to discuss partnership opportunities with the USA to develop this original Philippine technology.
