BACOLOD CITY — Several patients were temporarily evacuated Tuesday night after a fire broke out at the old building of the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital in Dumaguete City.
Negros Oriental Gov. Manuel “Chaco” Sagarbarria immediately went to the hospital to assess the situation and ensure the safety of patients and staff.
He said the Bureau of Fire Protection quickly contained the blaze, though investigators have yet to determine the cause.
“There was really no big fire, and thanks to our fire responders for acting very fast,” Sagarbarria said.
He added that the hospital’s molecular laboratory — located beside the outpatient department and near the pediatric intensive care unit — was closed following the incident.
The cause of the fire remains unclear, whether due to faulty wiring, an electrical issue, or possible foul play.
By around 8 p.m., the situation had normalized, and most patients were returned to their rooms.
Pediatric patients, however, were transferred to other hospital sections as a precaution.
No injuries were reported.
“Basically, it’s just inconvenience,” Sagarbarria said.
He praised the hospital staff and fire responders, emphasizing the province’s preparedness.
“You can see the resiliency of the province. We are practically prepared for the worst-case scenario. It could have been worse if we were not prepared,” he said.
Sagarbarria also expressed hope that the laboratory equipment, which he described as costly, was not damaged.
A full assessment of the structural condition and electrical systems will be conducted to prevent similar incidents.
In a social media post, hospital management thanked everyone who assisted during the emergency.
“Your swift response and tremendous support have been instrumental in ensuring the safety of our patients and staff. We are forever grateful,” they said.
Meanwhile, the Department of Health–Negros Island Region Center for Health Development, located on the third floor of a nearby building, implemented alternate work arrangements starting Wednesday, Nov. 19, to allow for full structural and electrical inspections.
Public service remains uninterrupted through remote coordination and emergency communication lines.
The agency said it will continue coordinating with the hospital and the provincial government to strengthen emergency preparedness and overall service capability.
