Filipinas face New Zealand in 2027 World Cup buildup

The Philippine women’s national football team will face New Zealand in two international friendlies on Nov. 29 and Dec. 4, 2026, at Porirua Park in Wellington as both squads intensify preparations for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The matches will give the Filipinas another opportunity to test their tactical discipline, defensive organization, and attacking capabilities against a World Cup-bound opponent known for its physical strength and speed.
For the Philippines, which has already secured its second consecutive Women’s World Cup appearance, the series forms part of a broader campaign to gain international experience and improve on its historic debut in 2023.
The fixtures also mark the Filipinas’ return to Wellington, where they stunned co-host New Zealand, 1-0, during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Sarina Bolden scored the historic winning goal in the 24th minute at Wellington Regional Stadium, giving the Philippines its first victory in a FIFA World Cup.
This time, the Filipinas will face a New Zealand squad undergoing changes as both teams build toward the tournament in Brazil.
The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) is encouraging the Filipino community in New Zealand to attend the matches and provide the national team with strong support.
PFF President John Anthony Gutierrez said the presence of Filipino supporters could help motivate the players during the two-game series.
“We have fantastic Filipino fans in New Zealand, and we would love to see as many of them as possible at Porirua Park. When the Filipino community fills the stands, it makes a real difference to the players. We invite families, friends, schools and community groups to come out and cheer for the Filipinas,” Gutierrez said.
Tickets will be available through a presale for Football Whānau members beginning Nov. 2, while general ticket sales will open Nov. 4.
Admission costs NZD 20 for adults and NZD 5 for children aged 14 and younger, excluding ticketing fees.
Both matches will be broadcast live and free on DAZN and TVNZ, allowing supporters who cannot attend the games to follow the Filipinas’ preparations.
Head coach Mark Torcaso welcomed the opportunity to face the Football Ferns, describing New Zealand as a formidable opponent whose playing style will challenge his squad.
“This is a great occasion for us to play Oceania’s best team and a team that is going to the World Cup. New Zealand is another different opponent that provides us with another different challenge. They are fast, strong, and dangerous in transition,” Torcaso said.
The Australian coach believes the matches will provide a valuable examination of the Filipinas’ ability to handle opponents who can quickly shift from defense to attack.
Torcaso also expects the Football Ferns to field a different-looking squad with new players bringing fresh qualities to the team.
“We anticipate playing against a very different side. They have some new faces, fresh faces that will give them a different look, one that we are excited by and looking forward to.”
New Zealand, which has also qualified for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, will use the series to conclude its 2026 international campaign under head coach Michael Mayne.
The matches will be played at Porirua Park, home of Wellington Phoenix’s women’s team, which reached its first A-League Women Grand Final earlier this year.
Torcaso expressed appreciation for the PFF’s continued support of the national team’s international training and competition program.
“It’s great for our girls to return to Wellington for this big occasion. The World Cup is a big competition and strong opposition like NZ will help with our preparations for the World Cup. I cannot thank the PFF enough for supporting us in returning to NZ to face a great World Cup opponent,” he said.
The New Zealand series continues an extensive international campaign designed to expose the Filipinas to different footballing styles before the global tournament.
In September, the Philippines reached the quarterfinals of the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, where it faced Japan, China, Hong Kong, and Uzbekistan.
The quarterfinal finish matched the team’s achievement in the previous Asian Games and provided another opportunity to compete against established Asian football programs.
The Filipinas then traveled to Peru for two international friendly matches in October, gaining experience against South American opposition ahead of next year’s World Cup.
The matches were part of the PFF’s preparation program, which includes international training camps and friendlies across several continents.
The Philippines secured its place in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after defeating Uzbekistan, 2-0, in a qualifying playoff during the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in March 2026.
The victory ensured the Filipinas would return to football’s biggest stage after their breakthrough appearance in Australia and New Zealand three years earlier.
With World Cup qualification already secured, the coaching staff is now focused on building consistency and preparing the squad to compete more effectively against higher-level opposition.
Gutierrez credited the players and coaching staff for maintaining their commitment through consecutive international competition windows.
“The players and coaching staff have been working hard across several windows. We thank them for their commitment, and we thank the Filipino fans who stay up and travel to support them. We hope to see many of them in Wellington,” Gutierrez said. (PFF)
