FIBA qualifiers: Brownlee out for Gilas’ must-win Window 4

The Gilas Pilipinas Men’s National Basketball Team will have a banged-up lineup heading into the fourth window of the 2027 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers.

According to multiple reports, Justin Brownlee, Gilas’ longtime naturalized player, will not see action against Jordan and Iran because of lingering health issues, as announced on Aug. 24, 2026.

“The big elephant in the room is Justin. He is not here and most likely not play. We’ll be going without Justin in the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers,” said Gilas head coach Tim Cone.

Gilas confirmed that Brownlee was supposed to arrive last Sunday to join the team for its final intensive training camp ahead of its game against Jordan on Aug. 28, 2026.

However, the Barangay Ginebra import didn’t arrive and later informed the national team that he was still not back in optimum condition.

After suiting up in the loss against New Zealand, Brownlee sat out Gilas’ next game against Australia because of multiple leg injuries.

Without Brownlee, Gilas will have to score two huge wins with an all-Filipino lineup if it wants to keep its FIBA World Cup bid alive.

Gilas currently carries a 2-4 win-loss record and will need a decent showing in the next window to boost its chances of earning a return ticket to the FIBA World Cup.

If Gilas manages to secure a top-three finish in Group E, it can earn direct qualification to the main draw, but a tough schedule lies ahead as the team was drawn with Saudi Arabia, Australia, Iran, Jordan, and New Zealand in the bracket.

As the saying goes, every cloud has a silver lining, and that’s exactly what Filipino hoops fans had in mind after Kai Sotto finally ended his two-year hiatus from the national team.

After missing a total of 13 FIBA-sanctioned games because of a torn ACL he suffered in January 2025, Sotto is now back and ready to don the blue and white threads of Gilas.

The impact of his absence was significant, as Gilas went 4-9 without Sotto, including a disappointing four-game losing streak against New Zealand and Australia from February to July 2026.

Now back in peak condition, Sotto is expected to anchor Gilas in the paint and make up for Brownlee’s sudden absence in the must-win Window 4.

Joining Sotto in the official 14-man pool are June Mar Fajardo, AJ Edu, Carl Tamayo, Justin Arana, Justine Baltazar, Troy Rosario, Kevin Quiambao, Dwight Ramos, Chris Newsome, CJ Perez, Juan Gomez de Liaño, Scottie Thompson, and RJ Abarrientos.
