Festive Walk Iloilo Brings Ilonggo Stories to Life in Full Bloom

Rooted in Iloilo’s biodiversity, maritime traditions, and local craftsmanship, three creative works form part of Experience Iloilo City and Iloilo Business Park’s first anniversary as Iloilo City’s Center of Arts and Culture.

The natural wonders, traditions, and creative spirit of Iloilo take on new forms at Festive Walk Iloilo, where art brings visitors clo/ser to the stories that continue to shape the City.

These creative pieces are part of Experience Iloilo City, a month-long celebration marking Iloilo Business Park’s first anniversary celebration as Iloilo City’s Center of Arts and Culture. Throughout July, the destination comes alive through sculpture, painting, architecture, music, literature, dance, and cinema, bringing Ilonggo artistry, heritage, and community together in one vibrant celebration.

Inspired by the vibrant floral biodiversity flourishing along Iloilo City, the iconic Paraw, and the creativity of local artisans, each piece captures a distinct expression of Ilonggo identity, resilience, and pride.

The journey begins with Bloom of Light, a luminous tribute inspired by the vibrant floral biodiversity of Iloilo City, celebrating the beauty, resilience, and richness of the city’s thriving natural landscapes.

Created by Oton-based contemporary artist Khyle Columna, the installation transforms the rare bloom into a symbol of resilience, hope, and environmental awareness. Drawing from his family’s background in agriculture and construction, Columna brings organic and structural elements together in a striking interpretation of Iloilo’s natural heritage.

More than a striking visual statement, the installation highlights the importance of protecting Iloilo City’s unique biodiversity for generations to come.

From its natural landscape, the journey continues with the Paraw, a timeless symbol of Ilonggo heritage inspired by the Paraw Regatta Festival—the oldest traditional sailboat race in Southeast Asia.

Echoing the enduring spirit of the Paraw Regatta, the traditional sailboat becomes a vibrant canvas of Ilonggo life. Designed by architecture student and visual artist Kate Tillo, its sails feature colorful depictions of Iloilo’s landmarks, signature festivals, and beloved local delicacies.

Each sail becomes a visual journey capturing the stories, traditions, and aspirations that continue to propel Iloilo forward. More than a tribute to the region’s maritime legacy, Sailing Stories reflects how culture, tourism, and community come together to create a city constantly moving toward progress while remaining anchored in its roots.

Completing the experience is Flourish: Threads of Iloilo’s Floral Diversity, which brings together nature and handmade craftsmanship through an intricate textile garden.

Created in collaboration with Crochet by Joana Viena Triol, a local handmade crochet enterprise, the installation transforms Iloilo City’s native and cultivated blooms into carefully handcrafted pieces. Each flower reflects the patience and skill of local makers while celebrating the province’s natural beauty and vibrant creative communities.

Through its woven details, Flourish celebrates Iloilo’s floral biodiversity while underscoring the value of supporting homegrown enterprises and preserving the traditions that continue to enrich the city’s cultural identity.

Together, the three creative installations bring Iloilo’s heritage, natural beauty, and local artistry into one shared experience at Festive Walk Iloilo. From the colorful sails of the Paraw and the handcrafted blooms of Flourish to a radiant tribute to the city’s thriving natural landscapes, each work tells a distinct story of identity, resilience, and Ilonggo pride.
