BACOLOD CITY — A birthday celebration for a 33-year-old man ended in his death after he was allegedly shot by his 74-year-old father following a drinking session and misunderstanding at the victim’s house in Barangay Libas, Isabela, Negros Occidental, on Thursday.
Police identified the victim as Losio Jr., a laborer.
Police Maj. Joseph Partidas, chief of the Isabela Municipal Police Station, said the father joined his son and two friends in a drinking session before a heated argument erupted between the victim and one of his friends, leading to a commotion.
The suspect intervened to pacify them but later got into an altercation with his son, prompting those involved to go home, Partidas said.
The victim later went to his father’s house and reportedly provoked him by shouting and challenging him to a fight.
Irked by his son’s actions, the suspect took an improvised shotgun and allegedly shot the victim, hitting him in the right shoulder, Partidas said.
Partidas said the victim would usually cause alarm and scandal when drunk, and his father would often pacify him.
Citing statements from relatives, Partidas said the victim and the suspect had a misunderstanding three years ago but had already reconciled.
The suspect is under police custody but will be released after the lapse of the 36-hour reglementary detention period on Saturday if no charges are filed.
In a separate incident, a 66-year-old father and his 39-year-old son were injured after they allegedly hacked each other over a misunderstanding in Barangay Consuelo, Ilog, on Thursday night.
Police Maj. Randy Babor, chief of the Ilog Municipal Police Station, said the victim, identified only as “Red,” was about to sleep when his father, identified only as “Cardo,” arrived home intoxicated and caused a disturbance.
Cardo allegedly got irked when his son told him to keep quiet.
He grabbed a bolo and allegedly attacked his son, hitting him in the right hand, Babor said.
Red also grabbed a bolo and reportedly retaliated, hitting his father in the left hand.
Babor said the case will be settled by the family, as the suspect would usually act that way when intoxicated.
