A 61-year-old farmer was arrested after allegedly shooting and killing his son during a struggle at their home in Alimodian, Iloilo.
The incident occurred around 10 p.m. on Dec. 5 in Barangay Cabacanan Rizal, a remote village about 31 kilometers from Alimodian town proper.
Police said the suspect, identified as alias Jenn, a widower, had just returned from a neighbor’s birthday party when the fatal encounter happened.
Lt. Rolly Sorongon, Alimodian deputy police chief, said there was no prior conflict between Jenn and his 25-year-old son, Keven, before the incident.
Jenn was accompanied home by a friend named Jomar. An argument reportedly broke out between the two, prompting Jenn to retrieve a firearm.
Jomar quickly fled the house upon seeing the gun. Keven, who was drinking at a nearby neighbor’s house, rushed home after hearing the commotion.
Upon seeing his father armed, Keven tried to disarm him. During the struggle, the firearm went off, striking Keven in the left side of his abdomen.
Neighbors rushed the victim to another village where personnel from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office were waiting.
Keven was brought to Aleosan District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Jenn was placed under citizen’s arrest by a barangay official following the incident.
Police are investigating the case to determine whether criminal charges will be filed.
