BACOLOD CITY — The remains of 29-year-old Private First Class John Rey Brasil will be brought to his hometown in Guimbal, Iloilo, on Wednesday, his wife announced on social media.
His remains currently lie in state at their residence in Barangay Pandanon Silos, Murcia, Negros Occidental.
The wake will resume in Guimbal on June 20 until his interment in July, according to the announcement.
“We kindly ask for your prayers and support for our family during this time. Thank you for your sympathy, condolences, and heartfelt messages,” Brasil’s wife, Nicole, said.
Brasil was killed June 1 during an armed encounter between the Army’s 79th Infantry Battalion and remnants of the dismantled Northern Negros Front in Barangay Tamlang, Escalante City.
The couple had been married for a year.
The National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict also mourned Brasil’s death, saying he made the ultimate sacrifice in confronting the New People’s Army.
The New People’s Army is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, while the NTF-ELCAC is the government’s anti-insurgency task force.
“No words can fully ease the pain of such a loss, but we hope they find comfort in knowing that he lived a life of courage, purpose, and service to others,” the NTF-ELCAC said in a statement.
The anti-insurgency task force said Brasil exemplified the highest ideals of military service — selflessness, bravery, and unwavering commitment to duty.
The task force said Brasil’s sacrifice was made in pursuit of a peaceful province.
“He stood as a steadfast defender of peace, placing himself between the vulnerable communities and those who sought to sow fear, violence, and instability,” it added.
His dedication to peace extended beyond military service as he advocated for the Youth for Peace Movement-Northern Negros Chapter, which promotes patriotism, responsible citizenship, and community involvement among young Filipinos.
“Through his words and example, he helped shape young minds and encouraged them to become partners in nation-building,” the task force said.
“You have completed your mission with honor. Your nation remembers. Your people are grateful. Your legacy lives on,” it added.
Brasil’s father remembered him as dependable and generous.
He said the family understood that death was a risk in military service and had accepted his fate, though the loss remained painful.
