Scientists and experts convened to present studies, initiatives and programs at the Conservation Genomics Colloquium 2025, held on April 15 at Silliman University in Dumaguete City.
The event was jointly organized by Silliman University and the University of the Philippines Visayas, through the Philippine Genome Center Visayas.
In his message, UP President Angelo Jimenez encouraged scientists to make science aspirational, especially for the youth, to gain stronger public support.
Jimenez said scientists must learn to communicate, provide tangible examples and engage directly with communities.
“This is such a great time to make new heroes, and I want these new heroes to be scientists,” he said.
“Go out there, talk to the people and use science—suggest solutions to real-world problems,” he added.
Dr. Cynthia Saloma, former PGC Biodiversity Program Director, delivered the keynote address, covering topics on conservation genomics, localized conservation efforts, sequencing projects, genomic tools and current PGC initiatives.
UPV Chancellor Clement Camposano said he was elated that UPV could partner with Silliman University for what he described as a “significant scientific milestone.”
He emphasized that the partnership reflects the right scientific culture—one that values institutional collaboration.
Silliman University President Dr. Betty Cernol-McCann welcomed participants and said the event marks progress in their shared commitment to protect Philippine biodiversity using molecular genetics and collaborative research.
As part of the program, Dr. Robert Guino-o of SU presented an overview of the Visayan Spotted Deer Project, a collaborative effort between SU, UPV and PGC Visayas.
A panel discussion followed, where on-site and online participants asked questions to experts in the field.
The panel featured President Jimenez, Chancellor Camposano, Dr. Guino-o, Dr. Persie Mark Sienes, PGC Visayas Director Dr. Victor Marco Emmanuel, Ms. Ma. Carmel Javier, Mr. Albert Noblezada, UPV NIMBB Director Dr. Carmelo del Castillo and Dr. Saloma. (Carlson Alelis)
