Ex-NPA political instructor yields in La Castellana

BACOLOD City – An alleged former political instructor of the New People’s Army (NPA) voluntarily surrendered to authorities in La Castellana, Negros Occidental last Monday.

In a press briefing yesterday, Police Major Rhojn Darell Nigos, public information officer of Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (Nocppo), said the 71-year-old female rebel returnee is from Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental, who surrendered to La Castellana Mayor Rhumyla Nicor-Mangilimutan and Major Sherwin Fernandez, town police chief.

She was a former member of Central Negros 1-Komiteng Rehiyon Negros Cebu Bohol Siquijor (CN1-KRNCBS), according to Nigos.

Nigos said they considered this as a big accomplishment, following a clash between the Army’s 62nd Infantry Battalion (IB) and the alleged remnants of CN1 in Barangay Sag-ang in the said town on January 17, which resulted in the death of two suspected NPA rebels.

Nigos said they will need to secure the person to gather information and background of the former rebel to determine if she has an arrest warrant or involvement in past incidents. The police will coordinate with the Army and the Special Action Force (SAF), he added.

“Kung meron man siyang warrant, kailangan niyang sagutin sa court,” Nigos said.

Nigos said the former rebel decided to return to the folds of the law due to the strengthened anti-insurgency campaign of the Army and the police.

Last week, two alleged former members of the dismantled Northern Negros Front (NNF) under the KR-NBCS also surrendered to the police in Talisay City, and Don Salvador Benedicto town in Negros Occidental.
