A former Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU) member was arrested at a police checkpoint at Calinog, Iloilo morning of May 18.
Jonilo Pedregosa, 41, a resident of Barangay Toyungan, Calinog, yielded a firearm when he passed through a checkpoint at Cabugao village.
Captain Dadje Delima, Calinog police chief, said they stationed the checkpoint on a roadside curve.
“He might have been surprised and was already too late for him to turn back,” Delima said.
They first asked for the suspect’s driver’s license and his motorcycle’s certificate of registration.
When he opened his sling bag, police saw in plain view a caliber .45 Colt pistol (serial number 724835) loaded with seven live ammunition in its magazine.
Pedregosa failed to present valid permits for his firearm.
Delima said the suspect claimed that he, being a former CAFGU member, had been receiving threats from the rebels.
The CAFGU is the civilian militia group that aides the military.
Pedregosa is now detained and will be charged for violation of Republic Act 10591 (Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act).
