BACOLOD CITY — A 74-year-old woman was gunned down by unidentified armed men in Purok Halimbawa, Barangay Tapi, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, on Tuesday.
Police identified the victim only as “Leonor,” the owner of a house allegedly used as shelter by seven New People’s Army (NPA) rebels killed during encounters with government forces in April 2025.
Based on the investigation, three armed men arrived at the victim’s residence. One suspect approached her husband and asked about her whereabouts.
The husband later accompanied the suspects to the home of the victim’s sister, where the suspects told him to go inside and introduced themselves as NPA members.
Leonor was then instructed to go to the balcony. A gunshot was heard shortly after, and the suspects immediately fled.
She was found lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head.
Recovered from the scene was a fired bullet casing from a 9mm-caliber firearm.
Police said they have yet to identify the suspects and determine the motive. The investigation is ongoing.
In a statement, the Philippine Army’s 15th Infantry Battalion (15IB) strongly condemned the killing.
Lt. Col. Roberto Maduli, commander of the 15IB, said the killing of any civilian is a serious crime under the law and a grave violation of religious and moral principles.
“Such an act is unacceptable and has no place in a society that upholds the sanctity of life,” he said.
The 15IB said it is closely coordinating with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the local government unit to ensure a fair, objective, and thorough investigation.
Authorities called on the public to remain calm, refrain from speculation, and help by providing any information that could assist the investigation.
They assured the community that justice will be pursued through lawful means and that all efforts will be taken to safeguard the lives and welfare of residents.
The 15IB extended its deepest condolences and sympathies to the bereaved family.
