BACOLOD CITY – An elderly woman died after being struck by a truck on Araneta Street, Barangay Tangub, on Wednesday night.
Police identified the victim as Rosario Espiritu, 71, a resident of the same village.
Police Major Ramel Sarona, head of the Traffic Management Unit (TMU), reported that the victim was crossing the road on a pedestrian lane when an allegedly speeding truck hit her, causing her to go under the vehicle.
The truck driver attempted to avoid the victim but was unsuccessful. The victim was declared dead at a hospital due to head injuries, according to Sarona.
Sarona noted that the truck driver failed to notice the victim, likely due to poor lighting in the area.
The truck, which was loaded with sound system equipment, was heading south at the time of the accident.
Charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide were filed against the truck driver yesterday after both parties failed to reach a settlement, Sarona added.
