An elderly woman was killed after a detached wheel from a six-wheeler truck struck her at Dingle, Iloilo, on the morning of November 10.
The victim, an 80-year-old known by the alias Lucy, was sitting in a waiting shed around 10 meters from her house in Barangay Tabugon, Dingle, when the incident happened at 7:15 a.m.
Family and neighbors said the woman had a morning habit of sitting in the shed to pass the time.
She was alone when a wheel and tire detached from an Isuzu Forward truck.
The wheel hit her body while the tire rolled and landed about 20 meters away from the shed.
Lucy was rushed to Iloilo Provincial Hospital in Pototan town but was declared dead on arrival.
The truck was driven by a man known as Rey, 36, of Barangay Udian, Janiuay.
He was transporting live broiler chickens from Passi City to Santa Barbara when the incident occurred.
Chief Master Sergeant Emmanuel Doromas, investigator at the Dingle Municipal Police Station, said the driver claimed to have checked the vehicle beforehand and found no issues.
However, initial findings indicated a tire blowout and a defective rim that needed replacement.
Lucy’s only child later executed an affidavit of non-interest and entered into a compromise agreement with the truck’s operator.
