BATAD, Iloilo — A heated argument over an unpaid debt led an elderly man to stab his neighbor on the evening of Dec. 7 in Barangay Quiazan Florete, Batad.
Police identified the victim as “Shirley,” 39, who sustained a stab wound below her right breast.
Reports indicated that 73-year-old Danilo delos Angeles had just returned from harvesting vegetables when the incident occurred.
As delos Angeles passed by Shirley’s house, he confronted her about her unpaid debt.
Delos Angeles had sold two sacks of rice to lend money to Shirley, who allegedly used it to purchase medicine. The victim’s husband is the suspect’s nephew.
Batad police chief Captain Ma. Rosela Buenvenida said the woman became irritated when asked to settle the debt.
“She got annoyed because she was repeatedly being asked to pay,” Buenvenida said.
The verbal altercation escalated, and during the argument, delos Angeles, who was holding a knife used for harvesting vegetables, stabbed the victim.
Shirley was initially brought to Jesus Colmenares District Hospital in Balasan and later transferred to Western Visayas State University Medical Center.
The suspect was arrested immediately after the incident.
Buenvenida stated that the victim’s family plans to file charges against delos Angeles.
