An 82-year-old man was found dead inside his room in San Miguel, Iloilo, on the evening of September 29.
Police investigators believe the victim may have died of suffocation.
San Miguel police chief Capt. Bryan Alejo said the man’s eldest son discovered the body around 6 p.m. Monday when he returned home from work.
The victim lived with his son and grandchild in Barangay San Jose, San Miguel.
Investigators surmised that the elderly man took a nap in the afternoon.
He was reportedly using a rechargeable mini fan while it was plugged in for charging.
Alejo said the fan exploded and ignited the victim’s mattress and bedding.
The room filled with smoke because the door and windows were completely closed.
An initial probe by the Bureau of Fire Protection-San Miguel suggested the fan may have been overcharged, causing it to explode.
