Alex Eala’s French Open main draw debut campaign was quickly cut short after losing at the hands of Colombian rising star Emiliana Arango on May 25, 2025, at Roland Garros.
The Filipina stalwart conceded her opening match in three tightly contested sets- 0.6, 6.2, 3.6- and will now be redirecting her focus in the doubles category together with her partner Renata Zarazua of Mexico.
Despite a huge fan-base advantage with most people shouting Eala’s name in the stands, the Colombian remained unfazed and managed to outwork the Filipina in the first, helping her control the pace of the game.
It was a nightmare start for Eala as the windy conditions at Roland Garros made it difficult for her to set up her signature groundstrokes, failing to adjust to the bounce of the ball at the clay court.
In just 31 minutes, Eala already succumbed in the opener and capped off the uncharacteristic start with 17 unforced errors. To make things worse, Arango dominated the service game and broke her possessions thrice.
Just when Arango thought that Eala would easily fold in the pressure, the successive and loud chants from the crowd finally took effect and energized her in the second where she bounced back with a much-improved hitting game.
From an error-plagued first set, Eala rekindled her fire in the following frame and started to get loose after her down-the-line forehand bombs finally kissed the line and avoided the outside mark.
After scoring two service breaks, Eala formally clinched the second to equalize the affair at 1-1, but Arango flipped the switch in the opening minutes of the third that helped her retake the momentum.
She immediately scored a service break in Eala’s first service possession and never looked back after picking up the momentum she needed to close out the match.
That was the only thing that Arango needed. An early service break that would put the entire pressure back on Eala, and she turned her team’s plans into reality before putting the match away with a steady performance in the last three sets.
Eala showed some signs of life after scoring several baseline exchanges and was in the position to get closer with another service possession but Arango put the cherry on top after her consistent rallies forced the Filipina to commit another string of unforced errors.
Despite the loss in the singles category, Eala will still have plenty of chances to claim a trophy at Roland Garros when her doubles match will kick off on May 28, 2025.
