Alexandra “Alex” Eala stands on the verge of becoming the first Filipino seeded at a Grand Slam, with her run to the Berlin Open semifinals lifting her to the cusp of a top-32 ranking ahead of Wimbledon.
The 21-year-old’s campaign in Germany ended on June 21, 2026, with a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Czech eighth seed Linda Noskova, but the result did little to slow her momentum.
The semifinal finish at the WTA 500 event earned Eala 195 ranking points and EUR 57,395 in prize money, a haul that strengthened her bid for a seeded position at the grass-court major.
Wimbledon will set its seedings based on the official WTA Rankings of June 22, with the top 32 players earning the protection of avoiding one another in the first two rounds.
That cutoff carried added weight for Eala, who was set to lose the 163 ranking points she earned for reaching the final of the Eastbourne Open last year, a total due to expire on the very date the seedings are locked.
Her Berlin points more than cushioned that drop, with the Filipina starting the week ranked 35th before climbing the live standings and moving ahead of Britain’s Emma Raducanu.
Eala also surged in the season-long standings, jumping to 24th in the WTA Race from 26th at the start of the week.
Before turning her full attention to Wimbledon, Eala is expected to compete in one more tune-up, the Bad Homburg Open, the last WTA 500 grass event before the third Grand Slam of the year.
The tournament’s dates have been listed as June 21 to 27 on the WTA’s official site, though the event’s own materials place the schedule slightly later in the week.
Eala entered the Bad Homburg singles main draw after the withdrawal of American Hailey Baptiste, joining a field that includes Iga Swiatek, Mirra Andreeva, Elina Svitolina, Karolina Muchova, Noskova, Naomi Osaka, Diana Shnaider, and Iva Jovic.
She is also set to play doubles in Bad Homburg alongside returning American great Venus Williams, who received a wild card into the pairing.
Wimbledon itself runs from June 29 to July 12, with Eala already holding direct entry into the women’s singles main draw regardless of her final seeding.
For the doubles competition at the All England Club, Eala will partner Czech player Nikola Bartunkova, whom she defeated in the singles final of the Birmingham Open earlier this month.
The Berlin run capped one of the finest grass stretches of her young career, with Eala compiling a 9-1 record on the surface this season.
She opened her Berlin campaign with a victory over reigning Queen’s Club champion Donna Vekic before stunning world No. 2 Elena Rybakina, 7-5, 6-4, in the Round of 16.
Eala followed that with a 6-3, 6-4 win over world No. 8 Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals, marking her fifth and sixth career victories over top-10 opponents.
The performance moved her to the brink of beating multiple top-10 players at a single event for the second time, after she took out Swiatek and Madison Keys at the Miami Open in 2025.
Reflecting on the confidence she carried into the grass swing, Eala pointed to her title run at the WTA 125 Birmingham Open as a turning point.
“Of course, winning Birmingham last week was a proud moment in my career, and it does give me a lot of confidence, and it’s left me with good feelings,” she said in a Tennis Channel interview.
She also acknowledged the intensity of the pre-Wimbledon stretch, noting the depth of competition across the warm-up events.
“But I am aware that everyone’s out to compete, especially here in Queens, everyone’s preparing for Wimbledon, so it’s really cutthroat,” Eala added.
A seeded berth would extend a remarkable rise for the Filipina, who reached a career-high ranking of No. 29 on March 16, 2026, becoming the highest-ranked Filipino in WTA Tour history and the first to break into the top 30.
The stakes are sharpened by her Wimbledon debut last year, when she fell in the first round to former champion Barbora Krejcikova, 6-3, 2-6, 1-6, as an unseeded entrant.
For now, the seeding remains a projection rather than a certainty, as the official list will only be finalized once the June 22 cutoff passes and the All England Club confirms its order of merit.
