The Department of Trade and Industry’s Iloilo Provincial Office is expanding support for local micro, small, and medium enterprises through a specialized enterprise development program for kakanin processors in La Paz district, Iloilo City.
In partnership with the Office of the Congresswoman of the Lone District of Iloilo City, DTI Iloilo will implement Project Kakanin, or the Kakanin Development and Enterprise Enhancement Program, to strengthen the business capabilities of local kakanin makers while helping preserve the community’s culinary traditions.
Kakanin refers to traditional Filipino delicacies, often made from glutinous rice, coconut milk, and sugar, and remains a staple in local food culture.
The program aims to equip participants with essential business skills, product development knowledge, and market access opportunities to help them turn traditional food-making practices into sustainable and competitive enterprises.
Through the initiative, DTI Iloilo seeks to help local processors adapt to evolving consumer demand while maintaining the authenticity and cultural value of their products.
A series of capacity-building sessions will be held every Thursday starting June 18, 2026, to provide participants with practical knowledge on entrepreneurship, business management, and enterprise growth.
The initiative supports the government’s broader MSME development agenda, as 2024 DTI data show that MSMEs account for 99.63% of the Philippines’ 1,241,476 registered business establishments.
The national MSME Development Plan 2023–2028 also identifies productivity, competitiveness, digitalization, and innovation as key strategies for strengthening the sector.
By investing in local food processors, DTI Iloilo reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive economic growth, stronger community-based enterprises, and the preservation of Iloilo’s culinary heritage for future generations.
