DTI boosts Igbaras Robusta coffee farming skills
IGBARAS, Iloilo — The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Iloilo Provincial Office strengthened the capabilities of local coffee growers through a two-day Basic Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) in Robusta Coffee Farming training aimed at improving farm productivity and enhancing the quality of locally produced coffee.
The training was held on July 28–29 in Barangay Bagay, Igbaras.
DTI Iloilo conducted the activity through Negosyo Center Igbaras in partnership with the Sitio Buyuan-Baras Coffee Growers Association and the local government of Igbaras.
The program formed part of the municipality’s Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Month celebration.
The training equipped local Robusta coffee farmers with practical knowledge and technical skills to improve production and produce high-quality fine Robusta coffee.
Participants received instruction on coffee farm maintenance, pruning, nutrient management, pest and disease control, proper harvesting, and postharvest handling.
The activity also included hands-on demonstrations and a farm visit, allowing participants to apply good agricultural practices that improve coffee quality, productivity, and market competitiveness.
Good agricultural practices promote sustainable farming by improving crop quality, increasing productivity, protecting the environment, and ensuring safer agricultural production.
Igbaras Mayor Vicente E. Escorpion Jr. and Local Economic Development and Investment Promotions Office and Business Permits and Licensing Office representative Justine M. Estrologo attended the activity.
The local officials expressed support for initiatives that strengthen the municipality’s coffee industry through collaboration and capacity-building programs.
Resource speakers Ernesto Emano Jr., Emelyn Elgario, and Anita Emano of the Sitio Buyuan-Baras Coffee Growers Association shared their expertise on sustainable coffee production.
Municipal Agriculture Office Agricultural Technician Arnold Mosquera also discussed best practices in coffee farming and quality improvement.
The training supports broader efforts to improve coffee quality, increase farm productivity, and expand market opportunities for local coffee growers.
Through initiatives such as this, DTI Iloilo continues to empower agricultural MSMEs by enhancing farmers’ capabilities, promoting sustainable production practices, and strengthening the competitiveness of the local coffee industry.
