Dredging operation to boost Culasi Port capacity

ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) — The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) will soon begin dredging operations at Culasi Port in Roxas City to improve its competitiveness and support its economic development.

Roxas City Mayor Ronnie Dadivas confirmed that the PPA had informed the city government of the upcoming improvements.

“Once our seaport is developed, it means large ships will be able to dock, and it will be more convenient for us because we will no longer have to rely on the ports of neighboring provinces,” Dadivas said in Hiligaynon.

In July, an international cargo ship from Vietnam docked at Culasi Port to deliver a shipment of rice, highlighting the port’s potential for handling international cargo.

“We really encouraged them to come here because we need to boost activity in this area,” Dadivas added.

He said increased port activity would create jobs, lower commodity prices, and stimulate the local economy.

Dadivas also expressed confidence that more cargo vessels will use the port once development is complete.

In 2015, the USNS Mercy anchored off Roxas City but had to use smaller boats to reach land, reportedly due to limitations in depth and port infrastructure.

The hospital ship visited as part of Pacific Partnership 2025, delivering medical missions, disaster risk reduction training, veterinary care, and community service projects throughout Capiz. (AGP/AAL/PIA Capiz)
