Dr. Rollin Tabuena takes center stage in Profiles Asia

A magazine cover can capture more than a polished portrait, and for Iloilo pulmonologist Dr. Rollin Palermo Tabuena, his appearance on Profiles Asia frames a career built at the intersection of medicine, research, education, and community service.

The distinction places the clinician-scientist in a publication devoted to personalities whose professional journeys and contributions extend beyond their respective fields.

For Tabuena, the recognition brings national attention to work that has largely taken shape in Iloilo, where his practice has helped advance pulmonary medicine and diagnostic care in Western Visayas.

He is recognized as Iloilo City’s first interventional bronchoscopist, a distinction rooted in years of specialized training at home and abroad.

After earning his Doctor of Medicine degree from West Visayas State University, Tabuena trained in pulmonary diseases at Veterans Memorial Medical Center before pursuing postgraduate studies at Kyoto University School of Medicine in Japan.

His medical journey later took him to Ancona, Italy, for specialized training in interventional bronchoscopy, expanding the expertise he would eventually bring back to Iloilo.

That international exposure has remained firmly connected to local purpose, with Tabuena building a career that combines clinical practice with teaching, scientific investigation, and public health advocacy.

Among his notable contributions is his work involving loop-mediated isothermal amplification, or TB-LAMP, for the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis.

The technology offers results in about 60 minutes, providing physicians with a faster diagnostic option than conventional methods that can require considerably more time.

Tabuena helped introduce and advance the use of the approach in Iloilo hospitals, supporting efforts to identify tuberculosis cases earlier and move patients toward timely treatment.

His professional life, however, is not confined to laboratories, lecture halls, and hospital corridors.

Tabuena has also cultivated a public-facing role as a health and community advocate, bringing medical awareness closer to Ilonggos and demonstrating how a physician’s influence can reach beyond the consultation room.

That balance between highly specialized medicine and accessible community engagement gives the Profiles Asia feature much of its resonance.
