The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Guimaras District Engineering Office, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture (DA), has completed the construction of concrete farm-to-market roads in Sitio Liningwan and Sitio Camulong, providing safer and more efficient transportation for residents and farmers.
These roads address a major challenge faced by agricultural producers in Barangay Maabay, Sibunag, where high transportation costs hinder the delivery of farm products to markets.
Regional Director Sanny Boy O. Oropel said the newly paved roads will facilitate faster mobility, reduce transportation costs, and boost local economic development.
“These projects aim to improve transportation infrastructure, providing a reliable route for agricultural and community development,” Oropel said.
“These roads will significantly enhance access and connectivity, ensuring smoother transport and efficient delivery of agricultural products such as rice, charcoal, and livestock to trade centers,” he added.
District Engineer Randolfo A. Melosantos highlighted that the new roads will also improve access to health and social services, as well as provide safer routes to schools, government offices, workplaces, and businesses.
“With better road conditions, residents—especially students and workers—will no longer have to endure rough, muddy, and unsafe roads, making their daily commutes easier,” Melosantos said.
The PHP14.93-million project in Sitio Liningwan involved the construction of a 725-lineal-meter road with a 6.1-meter width and 0.20-meter thickness of concrete pavement. The project also included a 245-lineal-meter concrete rectangular drainage canal, pipe culverts, and reflectorized thermoplastic pavement markings and warning signs to ensure road visibility and safety.
In Sitio Camulong, PHP14.93 million was allocated for the construction of a 560-lineal-meter concrete pavement with a 6.1-meter width, along with a 650-lineal-meter rectangular drainage canal, concrete slope protection, pipe culverts, and reflectorized pavement markings.
These farm-to-market roads provide safer and more convenient access for local communities. Their completion will increase road capacity, accommodate more motorists, and provide residents, farmers, and business owners with a cost-efficient means of transportation. (DPWH)
