DPWH constructs slope protection structures along Binalbagan River

BACOLOD CITY – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed two significant slope protection projects aimed at enhancing the safety and security of local residents in Negros Occidental.

Undertaken by the DPWH Negros Occidental 2nd District Engineering Office, the projects include a ₱79.1-million structure along the downstream right bank of Binalbagan River, adjacent to Binalbagan Bridge, and a ₱99-million river control structure along Binalbagan-Isabela Road in Barangay San Jose.

These projects are designed to mitigate the risks of soil collapse and flooding in the area.

The first project involves constructing a 195.2 lineal meter concrete slope protection with a steel sheet pile foundation using U-type sheets.

The extensive work also includes a concrete pile cap reinforced with horizontal ties, providing robust defense against the erosive forces of the river.

The second project along Binalbagan-Isabela Road features reinforced concrete slope protection with steel sheet piles, ensuring stability and durability.

“These slope protection structures are vital for safeguarding lives, homes, and properties in Binalbagan. By preventing riverbank erosion and stabilizing infrastructure, we are enhancing the resilience of our communities against natural calamities,” said Regional Director Sanny Boy O. Oropel in a report from District Engineer Marivic M. Roldan.

“The slope protection projects are a testament to our commitment to improving the quality of life for our constituents. By reinforcing the riverbanks and road slopes, we are proactively addressing the challenges posed by natural elements and ensuring a safer environment for all,” RD Oropel added.

These projects underscore the DPWH’s commitment to infrastructure resilience, aiming to protect the local community from environmental hazards and enhance overall safety.
