The Department of Public Works and Highways has completed the construction of a new multipurpose covered gym and the rehabilitation of an existing gym in Sta. Barbara, Iloilo.
The PHP 10.147 million new building project involved the construction of a 12-by-18-meter covered gym with mezzanine, complete with electrical, plumbing, and painting works.
The PHP 14.703 million existing gym rehabilitation involved the replacement of roofing and windows, installation of wood floor tiles and simulated bricks at the front, provision of comfort rooms, and other necessary amenities.
Undertaken by the DPWH Iloilo 4th District Engineering Office, the projects aimed to provide a more conducive and all-weather venue for sports and community activities.
Multipurpose covered gyms are among the most common public infrastructure projects in Philippine municipalities, serving as versatile community spaces for sports, government programs, and cultural events, while also functioning as critical evacuation centers during typhoons and other natural disasters.
According to District Engineer Mario G. Soriano, the structures will provide a safe and versatile environment for sports and leisure activities, as well as for community gatherings and recreation.
“These covered gyms will not only serve as hubs for fitness, physical and sporting events, but will also function as vital space for community gatherings, meetings, as well as medical missions and other government initiatives,” Soriano said.
Soriano added that the covered gyms will also offer spacious areas for various activities of the town and nearby schools, providing students and teachers with all-weather venues.
Beyond providing space for sports and community events, the covered gyms may be utilized as temporary evacuation centers in times of calamities and disasters, offering evacuees larger, more ventilated, and spacious temporary shelter. (DPWH)
