The Department of Public Works and Highways has completed several multi-purpose covered gyms in barangays across central Iloilo, providing residents with venues for sports, events and emergency use.
The DPWH Iloilo 4th District Engineering Office completed an all-weather multi-purpose gym in Barangay Pajo, Zarraga, Iloilo.
The PHP4.949-million project involved the construction of a five-span building with 12 sets of reinforced concrete columns, tie beams, roof framing, roofing, electrical works and painting.
The structure also includes a basketball ring and a barangay stage for sports and community events.
In Sta. Barbara town, DPWH delivered a PHP10.393-million multi-purpose covered court.
The 16-by-28-meter building features 13 sets of reinforced concrete columns and includes a basketball ring and barangay stage.
In Leganes, a PHP2.969-million multi-purpose gym was completed at Leganes National High School.
The 5-by-15.9-meter structure includes reinforced concrete columns, roofing, electrical works and other necessary provisions.
The facility is designed to serve as a safer, more suitable venue for various school activities.
A 10-column multi-purpose gym was also completed in Alimodian town.
The PHP4.947-million project includes earthworks, reinforced concrete, finishing, civil and electrical works.
DPWH said the gym will help support local economic development and community activities.
District Engineer Mario G. Soriano emphasized the importance of such facilities in improving the physical, social and economic well-being of residents.
“These covered courts will serve as community centers where people of all ages and skill levels can enjoy a variety of activities and amenities to enhance their physical fitness, social development and economic progress,” Soriano said.
He added that the buildings may also be used as temporary evacuation centers during disasters, offering more resilient and safer shelter for displaced families.
Aside from roads, bridges and flood control structures, DPWH said it remains committed to delivering quality public infrastructure such as multi-purpose buildings.
“These gyms bring communities together and serve as beacons of shared experiences, gatherings and laughter,” Soriano said. (DPWH)
