The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has committed to accelerating the long-delayed expansion of the Iloilo International Airport in Cabatuan, following a meeting between Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. and Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez on Nov. 12 at the DOTr central office in Mandaluyong City.
Defensor sought updates on key project milestones, including timelines for approval, procurement, and the start of civil works.
He also relayed the request of Cabatuan Mayor Elizalde Pueyo to prioritize the rehabilitation and improvement of the Iloilo Airport North Access Road (Gaub–Tiring–Tabucan Road) in the 2026 budget.
In a letter dated Oct. 27, Defensor emphasized the need to keep the airport aligned with Western Visayas’ economic and tourism growth.
“The airport continues to serve as a vital gateway for commerce, tourism, and investments in the region,” Defensor wrote.
“However, the increasing volume of passengers and cargo has underscored the need for the timely implementation of the long-planned expansion and rehabilitation works.”
He also reiterated the province’s readiness to assist the DOTr and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), especially in securing permits and coordinating with stakeholders.
One of the major components of the project is the expansion and modernization of the passenger terminal to accommodate growing traveler demand.
Other improvements include upgraded escalator and elevator systems, rehabilitated restrooms, and additional air-conditioning units.
Daily Guardian earlier reported that the DOTr allocated PHP 132.9 million under the 2024 General Appropriations Act for the rehabilitation and upgrade of the Passenger Terminal Building, and an additional PHP 37.55 million for the installation of three new chillers.
A CAAP press release dated June 3 outlined the scope of terminal upgrades, which cover:
- Civil and structural works
- Architectural improvements (fascia cleaning, tiling, ceiling and wall cladding, painting, waterproofing, and door and window replacements)
- Mechanical and electrical upgrades (new air-conditioning units, fire alarm system, ducting, lighting fixtures, chilled water piping)
- Plumbing upgrades and new furniture
- Special equipment, including escalators, elevators, and repairs to the passenger boarding bridge and departure conveyor
The renovation will also expand the airport’s pre-departure area capacity from 727 passengers to 1,082.
According to Iloilo Airport terminal supervisor Arthur Parreño, the Pasig-based R.U. Aquino Construction and Development Corp. secured the contract for the rehabilitation works.
The project is expected to be completed by June 14, 2026, within a 300-calendar-day construction timeline.
The expansion supports the national government’s Build Better More program, which aims to modernize transportation infrastructure to boost investment and tourism nationwide.
