Dolphin Stranding in Negros Oriental, One Dead

BACOLOD CITY – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) District Southern Visayas reported that one dolphin was found dead after a pod of dolphins was stranded along the shoreline of Sitio Pambutan, Barangay Canlargo, Bais City, Negros Oriental, last Sunday.

Personnel from the Coast Guard Sub-Station Bais responded to the scene after receiving a call and discovered eight stranded dolphins.

Unfortunately, one dolphin was found lifeless, while the remaining seven were rescued and released back into deeper waters.

The PCG coordinated with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and Bantay Dagat personnel to conduct gender identification and measure the stranded dolphins.

The seven surviving dolphins were returned to the sea, while the carcass of the dead dolphin was buried.

According to the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), the dolphins may have been stranded due to low tide.

The CDRRMO added that the injuries observed on the dead dolphin might have been caused by debris, such as wooden objects, in the area.

Dolphin sightings in Bais City are not unusual, the CDRRMO noted. The city is known for its sandbar, a popular spot for dolphin-watching activities.
