DOH allocates PHP 100 million for Capiz hospital
By Felipe V. Celino

ROXAS CITY, Capiz — The Department of Health (DOH) has allocated an initial PHP 100 million for the construction of the proposed Capiz General Hospital in Pontevedra, Capiz.
Dr. Mar Wynn Belo, regional director of the DOH Western Visayas Center for Health Development, visited Capiz Gov. Fredenil “Oto” Castro at the provincial Capitol on Tuesday morning, Oct. 6, to discuss preparations for the project.
Belo said the DOH is prepared to begin construction of the proposed Level II hospital, which will have a 100-bed capacity, within the year.
The proposed hospital is an initiative of Capiz 1st District Rep. Ivan Howard Guintu.
Belo said the facility is envisioned as an extension or specialty hospital linked to the soon-to-open Capiz Medical Center in Barangay Lanot, Roxas City.
He said plans call for the outpatient department, emergency room, laboratory and ward to be among the hospital’s initial operational services.
The hospital will be built on a 12,000-square-meter, or 1.2-hectare, property donated by a prominent family through Guintu’s initiative, Belo said.
He said the project must complete the legal requirements governing the property donation, including a letter of intent, memorandum of agreement and deed of donation.
Also present during the meeting were DOH Western Visayas Center for Health Development officials Dr. Mary Joy D. Castroverde and Engineer Dubhe Lynn Guarnes, along with representatives of the Capiz Provincial Health Office led by Dr. Alex Nolasco.
Guintu has pushed for initiatives to upgrade and establish health facilities in the province, including plans for a major hospital in Pontevedra.
The proposed facility is intended to address growing health care needs in the municipality and augment existing services provided by facilities such as Bailan District Hospital.
Guintu has also pursued legislative measures and coordination with the DOH to upgrade health facilities in Capiz’s 1st District, with the goal of increasing bed capacity and improving the level of medical services available to residents.
