In preparation for the holiday season, the Department of Health Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) Western Visayas, in partnership with the Iloilo City Health Office and other regional agencies, recently launched an “Iwas Paputok” Caravan.
The event is part of the broader “Ligtas Christmas para sa Bagong Pilipinas” campaign, which aims to reduce holiday injuries and promote healthier celebrations across the region.
The caravan, which included participation from the Bureau of Fire Protection Region 6, Philippine National Police Region 6, and local hospitals, focused on educating the public about the dangers of firecrackers, which cause numerous injuries each year, especially among children.
DOH-CHD encouraged safer celebration alternatives, such as using drums, festive music, and light sticks, to prevent accidents and protect the environment.
Alongside the firecracker safety campaign, the DOH-CHD also launched “Healthy Handaan,” which advocates for nutritious holiday meals.
According to DOH-CHD Health Program Officer Johnfel Salvacion, the campaign promotes the “Pinggang Pinoy” model—a balanced plate of vegetables, fruits, protein, and grains—as an alternative to high-fat, sugary dishes traditionally served during noche buena and media noche.
This initiative aims to reduce the risk of diet-related illnesses and help families avoid hospitalizations during the season.
The Ligtas Christmas campaign also includes “Biyahealthy,” which encourages health practices like wearing masks and hand hygiene in crowded areas, particularly for holiday travelers.
Through “Iwas Paputok,” “Healthy Handaan,” and “Biyahealthy,” DOH-CHD Western Visayas urges communities to enjoy a safe and healthy holiday season.
The DOH emphasized the importance of responsible celebrations for a “Bagong Pilipinas” and a healthier Western Visayas.
