The Department of Energy (DOE) announced on Nov. 27 that a total of 956 megawatts (MW) of new power generation capacity has been integrated into the Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao grids. The development marks early momentum in President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s initiative to construct 200 power plants over the next three years.
Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin said the project completions are part of efforts to build a more resilient and dependable energy system. “Every megawatt we add to the grid is not just a number on paper; it is electricity for homes, power for businesses, and confidence for investors,” she said.
The added 956 MW includes twelve renewable energy plants, one oil-based facility, and one natural gas-fired power plant. Most of the facilities began commissioning in the second half of 2025.
The DOE emphasized that these additions will help ease pressure on supply during peak demand and improve grid flexibility by balancing stable baseload supply with variable renewable generation.
In addition to generation capacity, 160 MW of energy storage systems were commissioned in Luzon and Visayas. These systems are designed to store surplus electricity during low-demand periods and discharge power when demand spikes or renewable output dips.
According to the DOE, storage technology reduces the reliance on costly peaking plants and enhances the grid’s ability to integrate more renewable energy while maintaining stability.
Garin noted that the projects demonstrate how the government’s energy policy is translating into real infrastructure. She stressed that the combination of renewable energy, conventional power plants, and advanced storage supports the long-term goal of a cleaner, more secure energy mix.
The DOE stated that the latest commissioning milestones are among the initial results under the broader pipeline of projects aligned with the 200 power plant directive. The department pledged continued collaboration with private developers and regulators to streamline permitting processes and accelerate additional capacity build-outs.
