The Iloilo provincial government has reopened discussions on a proposed direct Iloilo–Seoul flight following a courtesy visit by Lee Sang-hwa, ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Philippines, to Arthur Defensor Jr. at the Iloilo Provincial Capitol on Jan. 26.
While initial plans were stalled by the COVID-19 pandemic, Defensor said the direct air link remains a priority for improving regional connectivity and strengthening economic ties.
Iloilo is home to about 500 Korean residents, and provincial officials said a direct flight could help boost tourism, trade, and people-to-people exchanges between Western Visayas and South Korea.
The discussion formed part of broader talks on strengthening cooperation between Iloilo and South Korea in infrastructure, education, tourism, information technology, and manpower development.
During the visit, Lee praised the Jalaur River Multi-Purpose Project Stage II, which is funded through South Korea’s Official Development Assistance under the Economic Development Cooperation Fund.
He described the project as “a game changer” and cited it as a strong example of an effective flood control initiative that supports agricultural productivity and climate resilience.

Lee also expressed optimism about the proposed Panay–Guimaras–Negros Bridge, a major inter-island infrastructure project supported by the Korean government that aims to improve connectivity and economic integration in Western Visayas.
On a personal note, Defensor shared his affinity for Korean culture, saying Korean cuisine is a staple in his household and that he enjoys cooking it himself.
Lee was accompanied by representatives of the Philippines–Korea Economic Council and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI)– Iloilo Chapter, led by PCCI Iloilo President Fulbert Woo.
