At PHP2,000 to PHP2,500 per ticket, the pricing effectively excludes many local residents from witnessing this vibrant tradition firsthand.

The reservation of 2,400 premium seats at the Freedom Grandstand exclusively for government representatives, sponsors, and invited guests further emphasizes the growing divide between the festival’s roots and its current incarnation.

Cultural festivals, at their core, are meant to be communal celebrations that unite people regardless of their economic status.

The Dinagyang Festival, with its rich history of street performances and tribal competitions, has traditionally been a testament to the Filipino spirit of community and shared cultural experience.

While organizers must manage logistics and safety, the commercialization of viewing areas threatens to transform this cultural heritage into a premium entertainment product.

The digital alternative of watching online, though practical, cannot fully replicate the immersive experience of witnessing the warriors’ thundering steps, the pulsating rhythms of drums, and the electric atmosphere of live performances.

Mayor Jerry Treñas’s decision to maintain mobile signals during the festival, despite security concerns, at least ensures that those unable to secure physical tickets can still experience the celebration through livestreams.

However, this digital compromise shouldn’t become a justification for limiting physical access to those who can afford premium tickets.

While technology bridges some gaps, it does not substitute the sensory experience of watching Dinagyang tribes perform live. The raw energy of the Ati tribe dances, the beating of drums, and the intricate choreography lose much of their impact when filtered through a screen.

The Iloilo City government, IFFI, and other stakeholders must strike a balance between logistical concerns, revenue generation, and preserving the inclusive nature of the Dinagyang Festival. For instance, they could designate certain areas for free public viewing, ensuring that those unable to purchase tickets still have a chance to witness the competition in person.

As we celebrate the achievements of tribes like last year’s champion Tribu Pan-ay, we must remember that their performances honor traditions meant to be shared with all Ilonggos.

The festival organizers should consider implementing a more inclusive ticketing system that reserves a significant portion of viewing areas for public access or introduces tiered pricing that makes the experience accessible to all economic levels.

The true measure of the Dinagyang Festival’s success lies not in ticket sales but in its ability to preserve and share our cultural heritage with every member of the community.
