The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Region VI opened a month-long celebration of the 34th anniversary of the Local Government Code to highlight transparent, participatory, and accountable governance across Western Visayas.
The observance is anchored on Proclamation No. 63, s. 1992, which declares October as Local Government Month, the second week of October as Local Government Week, and October 10 as Local Government Day.
Now on its 34th year, the Local Government Code of 1991 remains a cornerstone of decentralization, grassroots empowerment, and citizen participation.
Carrying the theme “Tatag at Pagkakaisa: Forging Transparent, Participatory and Accountable Local Governance,” the regional celebration pays tribute to strong and united LGUs while charting pathways for the future of governance in the region.
The calendar begins on October 8 with Development Talk (DevTalk) and the Regional Local People’s Council Forum to spur dialogue and collaboration among governance champions.
On October 10, a Local Government Day Caravan will roll through Sta. Barbara, Pavia, and Iloilo City to bring government services and engagement activities closer to communities.
Youth voices take center stage in “MIC ON: A Youth Discourse on Local Governance,” which opens with online eliminations and culminates in a live championship on October 30 at SM City Iloilo.
Research and policy innovation come into focus on October 28 through the Local Governance Research Forum x REDECON, spotlighting new knowledge and best practices.
Excellence and service will be honored on October 29 with the SubayBAYANI Awards in the morning, followed by the Lupon Tagapamayapa Incentives Awards and the Outstanding Barangay Tanod Awarding in the afternoon at the SM City Activity Area in Iloilo City.
From October 29 to 30, the “Bida ang LGU: Expo Booth Competition” will transform the venue into a showcase of creativity, programs, and innovations by LGUs across Western Visayas.
Friendly competition continues on October 30 with the Local Governance Quiz to test wit and knowledge of public service fundamentals.
The festivities conclude with a Culminating Program in Iloilo City, capping a month that celebrates the past, recognizes present gains, and envisions the future of empowered local governance.
DILG Region VI is calling on public servants, community leaders, youth advocates, and citizens to participate in activities that strengthen unity, transparency, and participation in local governance.
