The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Capiz conducted a mangrove assessment along the Palina River in Barangay Cagay, Roxas City, on July 7, 2025.
The activity followed a disaster resilience and ecosystem conservation assessment.
The assessment aimed to evaluate the condition of the mangrove ecosystem and identify factors negatively affecting its health and long-term sustainability.
On-the-job trainees from Aklan State University–Banga Campus, Capiz State University–Pontevedra Campus, and Northern Iloilo State University–Estancia Campus joined the activity.
Members of the Palina River Development Association Inc. and then Roxas City LGU CRM Coordinator Belinda M. Garrido also participated.
Garrido contributed valuable local knowledge and played an active role in the assessment.
The activity included a comprehensive examination of nearby mangrove stands, focusing on species identification, structural evaluation, and environmental observation.
The initiative underscores the critical role of mangrove ecosystems and aligns with observances such as National Disaster Resilience Month in July and the upcoming International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem.
“Mangroves play a vital role in enhancing coastal resilience, serving as natural guardians, protecting our coastline against storm surges, strong winds, and coastal erosion,” said DENR Region 6 Regional Executive Director Raul L. Lorilla.
