The Dallas Mavericks just added a major piece to their already talented coaching staff after tapping Frank Vogel to become their coaching consultant announced on October 3, 2024.
It was Dallas’ head coach Jason Kidd who confirmed their latest off-season development, joking that they begged Vogel to come to Dallas and help enhance their system.
“Being able to work for Frank was something that helped me with my coaching. Hopefully, we can win another title together,” said Kidd.
For three years, Kidd was under Vogel’s supervision when he was still an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers from 2019-2021.
The duo helped LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and the rest of the pandemic squad to clinch the NBA championship title in the bubble setup amid the COVID-19 times.
However, after the Lakers failed to repeat, the duo had separate NBA paths where Vogel went to coach the Phoenix Suns and Kidd mentoring Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving in Dallas.
Both decorated tacticians also had contrasting fates as Kidd steered the Mavericks back to the NBA Finals while Vogel crashed out in the first round of the NBA Playoffs.
Vogel then received a painful exit from the Suns after the franchise decided to fire him when they lost to Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Through that three-month span where Vogel’s name wasn’t floating in the coach’s free agent tracker, Kidd then made a bold move to tap his old friend and reunite in the Western Conference.
Kidd and Vogel will be put to the test on October 24, 2024, during their NBA opening campaign against the San Antonio Spurs.
