Daily Guardian is again in contention for national recognition from the Philippine Press Institute, joining four other daily newspapers as finalists in the 2025 Community Press Awards to be held during PPI’s 62nd anniversary events from June 4–6 at Hotel Lucky Chinatown in Manila.
Daily Guardian’s latest finalist citation follows recent PPI recognitions.
In the 2025 Community Press Awards, Daily Guardian won Best in Business and Economic Reporting in the daily category. The paper first won the same award in 2020 for during the 2019 Civic Journalism Community Press Award.
In 2024, during PPI’s 60th anniversary celebration, it was also named Outstanding Community Newspaper for Stories on Health Innovation and Collaboration in the daily category, an award bestowed by the Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Association of the Philippines.
In October 2021, PPI also named Daily Guardian the 2020 daily category winner for Best in Reporting on Migration Issues, citing its coverage of repatriated overseas Filipinos and migration-related concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The awards form part of PPI’s annual gathering under the theme “Stronger together: Our Stories, Our Communities.”The institute, known as the national association of newspapers and one of the country’s oldest professional media organizations, says its mandate includes defending press freedom and promoting ethical standards in journalism.
This year’s Community Press Awards will recognize excellence in Best News Website, Best in Photojournalism, Best in Environmental Reporting, Best in Business and Economic Reporting, Best Editorial Page and Best Edited Community Newspaper.
The awards ceremony, supported by PPI’s longtime institutional partner Nickel Asia Corp., will be graced by Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso. It will be followed by a fellowship dinner hosted by Megaworld Corp., led by Harold Geronimo, first vice president for corporate communications and media affairs.
PPI’s 62nd anniversary activities will also include its General Membership Meeting, National Press Forum and Media-Citizen Councils Roundtable Discussion. Jose Bayani D. Baylon, Nickel Asia senior vice president for sustainability, risk management and corporate affairs, chief sustainability officer and chief risk officer, will deliver the keynote address.
Media adviser Jaemark Tordecilla will lead a lecture and hands-on workshop on artificial intelligence use for community newsrooms. The roundtable discussion will gather heads of 14 Media-Citizen Councils to discuss issues affecting their communities.
