BACOLOD City – One of the projects undertaken recently by Central Philippine State University (CPSU) President Aladino Moraca after he took over the helm of the state university is to distribute solar panels to upland communities.
Moraca said these areas surrounding the state university cannot be accessed by the power utility firm and still use gas-lamps during nighttime.
So far, Moraca said 28 families have been given solar panels for their electricity needs.
They can even charge their cellphones now, he told reporters here.
He said hundreds have sent their requests for solar panels as well.
Moraca said that they are using the proceeds from their organic products to acquire the solar panels.
The panels are given free to recipients who in turn help in guarding the reservation area from illegal poachers and other illegal activities.
The school also put up two solar powered water pumps to address the water needs of the upland communities.
Meanwhile, Moraca also confirmed to reporters that together with the board of directors, they changed the composition of the Bids and Awards Committee of the state university.
It is part of the effort to streamline the system and eradicate graft and corruption.
He cited the proposed construction of a three-storey building worth P49 million.
He said the previous plan was only limited to the structure and needed P31 million more to complete it.
Moraca said that upon review, the project was rebidded and the P49 million was made substantial for the 3-storey building.
He also said they decided to change the location as the previous site where the building is supposed to be constructed is near a pond and there are existing structures.
With the change, Moraca said the government was able to save P31 million.
