On Dec. 19, 2019, Judge Jocelyn Solis-Reyes, presiding judge of Branch 221 of the regional trial court of Quezon City, will promulgate the judgment on the Ampatuan Massacre case, after over nine years of trial.
The case called the attention of press organizations in the Philippine and of international media groups. The murder in broad daylight — of 58 persons, including 32 journalists and media workers — on Nov. 23, 2009 has been described as the “deadliest strike against the press in history.”
The massacre underscored the dangers to journalists in the Philippines, as advocates for press freedom and justice have focused on the months and years of trial.
We start today our “Countdown: Justice for Ampatuan 58” with the re-release of the “Humanitarian and Fact-Finding Mission Report” that our team from MindaNews, NUJP, CMFR, and PCIJ produced in December 2009, after a week of field and data-gathering work in Maguindanao.
